The primate behind Project Simia

brogan M.jpg

Hi! I'm Brogan, the primate behind Project Simia.

I began my journey into primatology when I attended university to complete a Masters of Zoology at Bangor University, where I fell more and more in love with primates. I focused my dissertation and Masters thesis on primate research, exploring responses to enrichment in zoo housed primates and the impacts of climate change on macaques. I've viewed wild chimpanzees, colobus, and baboons in Uganda, as well as worked with orphaned vervets and baboons in South Africa.

Safe to say I am a massive primate fan!

By harnessing this passion for primates, I created Project Simia with the aim to bring the exciting world of primates to you and to get you invested in a future where primates flourish!

Conservation starts with education. And education should be accessible to all. These are two key statements I wholly believe in and have incorporated into the heart of Project Simia.

Alongside Project Simia, I also stand as the Media Officer for the Primate Society of Great Britain (PSGB), volunteer at my local Wildlife Trust reserve in learning and events, and am active in research, leading on my own project looking at great ape tourism and social media.

Project Simia

Project Simia is a passion project created when I decided to bring my love for and knowledge of primates to people from all backgrounds. As a first-gen academic, it was quickly obvious to me how inaccessible science can be to the majority of people. Science is muddled away behind complex language and, it's biggest problem, paywalls. There is tonnes of extremely interesting and important content out there, but without making it accessible how can we hope for the general public to be interested in it?

This is where Project Simia comes in.

Launched initially on Twitter in 2020, Project Simia has grown immensely and expanded across the major social media platforms. It brings educational and fun posts to its followers, engaging people in learning and science in a way that is interesting and accessible. It covers a range of topics, from fun facts about species, to conservation issues, and cutting edge science.

Project Simia seeks to:

  • Bring EDUCATIONAL content to people of all ages and backgrounds on primates and what makes them special.

  • Get people INVESTED in conservation and seeing a future where primates flourish.

  • Encourage TAKING ACTION to make positive change not just in primate conservation, but in other environmental issues too.
